Using a toilet plunger
A toilet plunger (a ball or cup-type plunger) is designed specifically for unclogging toilets. The rounded lower surface nests tightly in the bowl, giving the plunger great suction action to dislodge the blockage. With the plunger in place, push down gently, and then pull up quickly to create suction that pulls the blockage back a bit and dislodges it.
Using a toilet plunger (as opposed to a sink-type plunger) keeps you from splashing as much water around because the ball of the plunger covers the entire hole. If all you have on hand is a small, sink-type plunger, try using it — it can’t hurt, and it just may work. More here at plumber San Antonio
Choosing a New Toilet
Today’s toilets are better looking and more efficient than ones of years past, because they use a mere 1.6 gallons of water per flush, compared to 3 to 5 gallons. You can find two basic styles of toilets: a one-piece unit with a combined bowl and tank, and a two-piece unit with a separate water tank and bowl. Two-piece units are more used and cost less than one-piece toilets.
The most used flush assembly is a gravity-fed flush toilet that uses the force of gravity and a siphoning, pull-through action to discharge the toilet bowl. Another toilet kind, a pressure-assisted toilet, relies on either water pumps or compressed air to boost the flushing toilet power. Our choice for a budding do-it-yourself plumber is the two-piece gravity-assisted toilet.
Most toilets are designed with a standard 12-inch rough-in dimension, which means that it’s located 12 inches from the wall. You can also find toilets with 10-inch or 14-inch rough-in dimensions.
If you’re replacing a toilet with a wall-hung tank, it will have a rough-in dimension of 14 inches. If this is the case, you can install a toilet designed for a 12-inch rough-in, but it’ll end up a couple inches from the back wall. Place a short piece of 2x lumber on the wall behind the tank to give support to the tank.
If your old toilet has a 10-inch rough-in dimension, you can purchase a new toilet with this dimension — you may have to special order it, however.
Before you begin this project, make arrangements for using another toilet. If your household has only one toilet, this may be the most important part of the job! Find a friendly neighbor (who is indebted to you) and prevail on his hospitality. Of course, if you have another toilet in the house, you’re in good shape.
You’ll probably find the bathroom easier to work in if you remove any extra doodads or decorations. Remove towels, baskets — whatever’s in the room — so that the toilet is free and clear to work on.
